Materials Needed:

  • Small amount of sock yarn (about 15-20g, there’s usually enough leftover from knitting a pair of socks to make one of these)
  • 7″ length of 1/2″ elastic (since the elasticity varies, make sure your elastic will be long enough to comfortably go around the bottle)
  • 32-inch size 1/2.25mm circular needle, or set of 4 size 1/2.25mm DPN’s, or size needed to obtain gauge.  You will also need a second needle (any length circular or a DPN) the same size or smaller to pick up stitches and knit the casing shut.
  • Tapestry needle

Guage:

36st and 48 rows = 4″

Notes:

While my version was knit on a circular sock machine and finished by hand, the basics remain the same..

Directions:

Using a stretchy cast-on such as the long tail method, CO 72sts, casting 36st onto each side of the circular needle, or 24sts onto each DPN.

Join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.  Place marker to mark beginning of round.

Knit 16 rows even.

Using a second needle, pick up stitches along the cast-on edge, and knit those along with your work (knitting through loops on both needles).  Skip the last 4 stitches of the cast-on edge to leave an opening for the elastic.

Knit until work measures about 5″ from casing.

Begin decrease rows:

  1. [k7, k2tog] around
  2. k all sts
  3. [k6 k2tog] around
  4. k all sts
  5. [k5 k2tog] around
  6. k all sts
  7. [k4 k2tog] around
  8. k all sts
  9. [k3 k2tog] around
  10. k all sts
  11. [k2 k2tog] around
  12. k all sts
  13. [k1 k2tog] around
  14. k all sts
  15. [k2tog] around

Using tapestry needle, run yarn through all remaining sts and pull tight

Finishing:

  • Thread elastic through opening in casing (using a large safety pin or diaper pin will make this easier), being careful not to twist elastic, and hand sew ends together.  Using the yarn tail from the cast-on edge, sew shut the casing.
  • Weave in ends.
